- Sammy played tailback and quarterback for
- the Washington Redskins. When he joined
- the NFL, teams played mostly a running and
- defensive game. The forward pass was first
- allowed in pro football in 1933, but few teams
- used it. ΓÇ£SlinginΓÇÖ Sammy," as he was called,
- changed that. Sammy cracked his wrist like
- a whip and slung the ball hard. He was the
- first overhand passer and the first to throw
- accurately on the run. More teams followed
- his example and began passing the ball.
